Why Muscles & Marbles

Need a life line?

Finding information is a cinch these days. Not like the old days of encyclopedias (didn’t everyone have Brittanica?) and libraries. Remember the amazing ‘microfiche’?

Today, if you google topics from wellbeing to weight control to avoiding chronic disease for boomers, you’ll find thousands of results. The problem is too much info; not too little. You could drown in it.

Who can you trust?

What happens if you find conflicting results?

Which do you believe? How do you know if the science is valid? How do you know if the authors are independent, paid or pushing their own barrows? How do you know if the research is leading edge or the same stale old stuff in a new wrapper?

What we ask

This is what we ask ourselves when we find interesting new research:

  • Who are the authors?
  • How long have they worked in this field?
  • What methods did they use?
  • What other articles have they written?
  • What papers have they published, in what journals?
  • Do they cite any sponsors or interests?
  • Do they sell any products related to this or any topic?

In short, are they independent enough to be trusted?

The real world

We add an extra step to the validation process: the ‘real world check’.

A bit like weather forecasters who don’t stick their heads outside, some researchers don’t check their results against the outside world. We do and find it very clarifying.

For instance: Kim is a keen cook and, early on, found that the French use more butter in cooking than anyone else, a lot more.

Later on, looking outside the kitchen with his research hat on, he found that the French had half the rate of heart disease and obesity of the US, the UK and here, Down Under.

How can this be?

Some call it ‘the French Paradox’ because it turns the ‘fat makes you fat and cholesterol kills you’ mantra on its head.  You can read more about this here.

A new perspective

That’s why Muscles and Marbles exists.

We know how to find, verify and simplify really complicated stuff. It’s what we’ve done for tech companies for three decades. Here, we’re focused on research to help us all thrive.

If we find a source is valid, we’ll share it with you. If it isn’t, we may still share it an example of what not to trust and why. In all cases, we link to our sources so you can make up your own mind.

We don’t pretend to be medical researchers, doctors or experts on anything. We’re not.

We’re professional information researchers. We know how to find & check technical material, and sift facts from marketing spin. We also know how to explain complex concepts in everyday English.

It’s what we’ve done for over 30 years. Read what others say about us.
