It Might Not Be Alzheimer’s: A Reader’s Story

A reader (we’ll call him PGN) bought our eBook ‘DEMENTIA: Keep Your Marbles’ and then bought it for four friends. In getting to know PGN, we found he’d had an experience that may help others. We’re pleased to share his crisp, insightful story here.

Technical Background

In 2013 I was running my own business from home as a Consultant Engineer.

I was having problems with my memory, first with short term memory, like forgetting what I came into a room for, and then with the time it took to “retrieve” data from the brain storage.

I was having problems with my memory, first with short term memory, like forgetting what I came into a room for…

PGN

‘Not To Worry’

I took the problem to my GP who asked me a set of standard questions.

I scored 29/30 and he said ‘not to worry’.

However, the problem was affecting my work, especially in technical meetings where there was no time to allow data to surface.

I scored 29/30 and he said not to worry.

PGN

‘No Sign Of Dementia Damage’

Next he sent me for a brain scan and the result came back as no sign of dementia damage, but the problem persisted and with great reluctance I retired at 67.

I would have much preferred to taper off my long hours and finish up around 72.

After retirement, I was very lethargic but I was not concerned as I thought my body was winding down after years of 80 hour weeks.

I would have much preferred to taper off my long hours and finish up around 72.

PGN

‘BINGO’

When I went to see my endocrinologist for my annual diabetes check, (I have had diabetes since I was 44), about 4 years after I retired, he said ‘I think we should check you for Anaemia’.

BINGO.

My first test came back to say that the level of Iron in my blood, which should be between 40 and 400, was below 8. We don’t know how far below, as pathologists cannot measure below 8.

I think we should check you for Anaemia.

PGN’s endocrinologist

‘Not A Difficult Thing To Fix’

No Iron means no Haemoglobin, which means no ability to transport Oxygen around the body, no fuel burning in the muscles, no power in the brain, in fact, lack of Oxygen in the brain leads to brain damage.

This was not a difficult thing to fix.

That was 4 years ago and my memory is still slowly recovering.

Clearer Picture, Simple Fix

Alzheimer’s is a constant worry, and, over the years, I have taken steps to try to avoid it.

With this ebook I now have a much clearer picture of what can help, and I am making changes to my lifestyle to address this concern.

I would recommend anyone suffering from the onset of memory loss get tested for Iron in blood.

It’s a simple test and a simple fix, and should be eliminated before assuming they have dementia onset.

I would recommend anyone suffering from the onset of memory loss get tested for Iron in blood.

Just purchased a mixed case from Kemeny’s on your advice – and saved an amazing $119 on one order. Can’t wait to see how much I save in a year.

Very happy to pay this small fee for what is the best weekly wine mailer on offer. Keep up the great work.

Kim is an outspoken defender of truth, justice and value-for-money in wine and I highly respect his opinions, his passion and his convictions.

Customer Reviews

The big surprise, as you say Kim, is there is literally no relationship between price and quality in the wine world. The $10 Azahara you recommended for our farewell party was ridiculously good.

Customer Reviews

Clive Davidson

Lisa and I have an annual Xmas dinner for twenty of our closest friends and your BWW delivers the goods every year. Not a bad bottle ever. Keep up the great work, mate.

Warren Mason, Competition Director, Sydney International Wine Competition
Huge devotion! Weekly updates! A really useful consumer service. You deserve all the goodwill you have.

Customer Reviews

David Jackson

I would never have found the Dandelion Vineyards Wonderland of the Eden Valley Riesling at Aldi for $15:00. I was down to the last two bottles and they had cost $20. Well done, Kim. Happy to recommend BWW to any person who wants fair, balanced ratings on good wines and where to buy them at bargain prices.
Customer Reviews

Carl Shipton

Didn’t know some of the wines, but I was blown away by the quality available for this kind of money. I’ve paid a lot more for labels I know and been hugely disappointed.

Last year I used your Best Wines advice to pre-order 6 months’ supply of wine to be shipped to me overseas. What a treat! Thanks for the great resource, Kim!

I buy wine for about a dozen families, for a company and for myself, with current cellar stock 1500 bottles. Your advice is a highly valued and reliable bench mark and, by the way, I am not a connoisseur collector but a consumer. I say drink and enjoy (in moderation of course)!

Customer Reviews

Bill Walter

I continue  to buy and taste  on your recommendations and thoroughly enjoying the experience and to date, not one disappointment. Don’t plan to retire soon!

Congratulations, Kim. You’ve been an invaluable source of information and I have no doubt that I am drinking better wine as result. Having only lived in Australia for 5 years, you’ve really given me an appreciation of how much great wine this country produces. So much so that I now can take a bottle to dinner with friends who have many more years of wine experience than myself and even raise a few compliments on my selections. Safe to say I think you can a lot of the credit for that!

Been looking for years for someone who concentrates on the value end of the wine market. It’s written from the right perspective and reduces the legwork needed to find good wines. Thank you.

You have a gift for wine description that mercifully avoids all the bullshit about the aromatic nuances of pear skins and Virginia tobacco leaf … Enjoying the prices, too.

I read with great interest every week all the wines you recommend.  I am a big fan of Riesling especially Leo Burings but have enjoyed your other recommendations Frogmore, Claymore and Heemskerk.  I buy all my wines through Kemenys as I like to support the independent wine suppliers.

Bought some of the Hilltops Shiraz (hidden label) from Kemenys after reading your recommendation. Excellent choice. Love your mailer. Thanks.

I’ve ordered a couple of 6-packs from your great list of value wines. I have about 500 wines racked up in my cellar but continually need drink-now wines for daily consumption.  However, some of your suggestions are making me wonder whether I need to buy more racks … Thanks.
